Being a nurse has given me great satisfaction over the years. I knew from the time I was 10 years-old I wanted to be a nurse. I cared for my dolls, my doll house was my little hospital. I hated being sick as a child, but was amazed by how my mother always took care of me. I always got better and Mom made sure I was as comfortable as possible. If they had snuggie blankets back then, mom would have wrapped me in one that said “Future Nurse”.
College was fun, I made lifelong friends, but College was my way of achieving my dream. I studied and was a straight A student, nothing was going to prevent me from doing the one thing I loved. I had some excellent teachers, people I respected and admired as they had dedicated their lives to making great nurses.
The day I graduated from College, my mother and father had the biggest smiles I had ever seen. My Mother had tears in her eyes, she knew how much this meant to me. I would soon start my first nursing job in two weeks. The job was at a nursing home, I was excited and nervous.
Ten years have passed since I first started at the nursing home and I am still at the same place. I take care of Mothers and Fathers that can no longer manage on their own. I see Aunts and Uncles, brothers and sisters every time I enter a room, I never see just a patient. My favorite part of my day, is when I see a person with a room full of family and friends coming to visit. It feels like I am returning the favor my mother did for me when I was a little girl. Maybe I will get my mother a snuggy this year that say “Dream Maker”.
